Full description
Annual national-level statistics on foreign ownership of Australian agricultural land, sourced from the ATO Register of Foreign Ownership of Australian Assets (commenced 1 July 2023; pre-2023 figures from the predecessor Agricultural Land Register). 10 annual snapshots from 30 June 2016 to 30 June 2025 (current). For each year: hectares of agricultural land held with a foreign interest, total Australian agricultural land (ABS estimate), and the resulting foreign-ownership share as a percentage of total. The ABS source dataset used in the denominator is recorded too (alternates between REACS and Census years). Use this for: foreign-investment analysts tracking the long arc of foreign capital in AU agriculture, M&A advisers on agribusiness deals, agricultural land valuers, journalists, public-policy researchers, and any FIRB-context query. Headline result for 30 June 2025: 13.0% of Australian agricultural land has a foreign interest (50.3M of 387M hectares). Trend: peaked at 14.1% in 2021, dropped to 12.3% in 2022 (post-COVID divestments), has since recovered to ~13%. Source: ATO Register of Foreign Ownership of Australian Assets, Agricultural Land workbook (Level of foreign ownership sheet). Note on shape: this is a wide-layout dataset where the year-end snapshot lives in the `year` dimension on each Observation, not in the response's top-level `period` field. `latest()` returns all 10 rows; sort by `record.dimensions["year"]` client-side to find the latest. This matches the existing ato-mcp pattern for annual wide-layout datasets (HELP_DEBT, SMSF_FUNDS).
