Full description

Long-format quarterly private health insurance performance database covering every reporting period from September 2023 onward. ~25,000 rows per release with health-insurer financial position, financial performance, capital adequacy, reinsurance, and operating-expense data. Use this for: health-sector analyst questions about Medibank / Bupa / HCF / NIB / HBF and the other ~30 registered private health insurers; industry-aggregate questions about PHI net underwriting result, claims ratios, capital strength; regulatory analysts tracking the AASB 17 transition for health insurers. Reported on the post-AASB-17 basis effective 1 July 2023; values are NOT directly comparable to pre-2023 data reported on the prior accounting framework. Source: APRA Quarterly Private Health Insurance Performance Statistics. Note: APRA also publishes separate quarterly PHI publications (Membership and Benefits, Coverage, Medical Gap, Membership Trends, Benefit Trends) which are NOT in this dataset - this curation focuses on the financial performance database. Common data_item acronyms (APRA-specific PHI jargon): - HIB = Health Insurance Business (the core PHI book - e.g. "HIB premium revenue" is the industry's total quarterly premiums) - HRB = Health-Related Business (ancillary travel, life, etc. that PHI insurers sometimes write) - HRIB = Health-Related Insurance Business Examples of high-value data_items: "HIB premium revenue", "HIB insurance claims", "Hospital treatment premium revenue", "General treatment premium revenue", "Net profit/(loss) for the period", "Capital Base", "Prescribed Capital Amount".
